Mikila Fetzer is the director of professional learning for the 38,000-student Sacramento City Unified School District, where she supports Mathematics, Sciences, Instructional Technology and Physical Education. She’s served in the district for nearly 20 years. During her tenure in Sac City, she has worked as a secondary math teacher and mathematics instructional coach, along with serving as the Mathematics Coordinator and a Director of Professional Learning supporting mathematics, the sciences, instructional technology and physical education. Ms. Fetzer has a keen interest in the intersection of policy and implementation in education. This interest was ignited by the state-level transition to Common Core work facilitated by the California Education Partners Math in Common collaborative. As a result, much of her professional work focuses on supporting the leaders and teachers in the district to create positive and engaging learning environments that support individual needs, focus on standards, and attend to the various district priorities and related state mandates.
Working with her team of subject-area coordinators and content-area specialists/coaches, Ms. Fetzer collaborates with the Academic Office leadership and teams to improve measure the effectiveness of professional learning, including student outcomes. In Sac City, professional learning not only includes learning sessions, but also the follow-up, on-site implementation support for teachers and administrators needed to increase successful implementation rates effecting growth in student outcomes.
