Dr. Aaron Spence has been superintendent of Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) since June 2014, overseeing the operation of 86 schools and the education of nearly 65,000 students. Having served communities as a teacher, administrator and superintendent, Spence’s passion for public education, equity work and transformational learning experiences for all students has been the foundation of a career spanning nearly three decades. Recent successes include the creation of an Entrepreneurship and Business Academy, a first-in-the-nation Environmental Studies program at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Brock Environmental Center, digital learning opportunities and access for every child within VBCPS schools, and expanded partnerships with community organizations, higher education, businesses and the military. He was selected as 2018 Virginia Superintendent of the Year by the Virginia Association of School Superintendents, as a 2019 Excellence in Educational Leadership Award recipient by the University Council for Educational Administration, and as the 2021 EmpowerED Digital Superintendent of the Year by the national CoSN.
